The number of tickets sold for the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships has now hit 50,000, British Cycling announced today – making it the most successful in the modern era.
The world championships will be held in London from 2-6 March at the Lee Valley VeloPark, the home of so much British success at London 2012. Nine of the 12 sessions are now completely sold out with limited tickets still available on Ticketmaster for the remaining sessions.
The event will see the world’s best cyclists descend on the capital as they compete for the coveted world champion rainbow jerseys.
The squad that will represent the Great Britain Cycling Team was announced this week with Mark Cavendish, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Laura Trott and Becky James all named in the team.
British Cycling’s director of cycle sport and membership, Jonny Clay, said: “We are delighted to see over 50,000 tickets sold, reflecting the incredible popularity of cycling in this country and the growing appetite for world class cycling events.
“The championships will see the very best riders from around the world compete to win the coveted rainbow jersey and a packed velodrome will provide a fantastic atmosphere, for riders and spectators alike.”
The championships form part of UK Sport’s National Lottery funded #EveryRoadtoRio series which features more than 30 world class events to help athletes qualify and prepare for Rio 2016.
