The event started basking in the May sunshine and with the promise of a good day’s racing. This was part of the national series and attracted well over one hundred riders and not just from the West Midlands with both London and Welsh clubs being particularly well represented. Also the categories started at Under 8s rising to 16 and it was both heartening and encouraging to see the younger riders racing.

The opening Scratch races provided the crowd with some entertaining racing with Ben Askey of Lichfield City CC taking first place in the under 8s, Fin Hawkins Palmer Park Velo RT second and Awen Roberts Towy Riders third. As the age increased more tactics came into play with some intelligent racing from Ben Hardwick Wolverhampton Wheelers and Ewan Grivell-Mellor. However it was Rhys Britton Cardiff JIF who eventually took the honours in the Under 14 Boys’ Scratch.

Maturity of racing could clearly be seen in both the Under 16 Boys and Girls where Joe Evans Velocity took the first Devil and Jacob Kelly Lichfield City CC the second. Meanwhile Ellie Coster Bush Healthcare CRT was first, Lucy Shaw Solihull CC second and Isabelle Clark Lichfield City CC third in the female event.

Unfortunately a crash took place during the Under 16 Boys Points which meant that a number of the riders would not be able to continue racing that day. It was felt that the fairest way was to finish their racing at this point and the rankings reflected that decision. Also because of time constraints the intended Keirin events didn’t take place and the programme went straight on to the final Time Trials for the remaining competitors.
