The twentythird of 25 weeks of prescribed training sessions designed to get you to your first sportive in the best possible shape.

As well as being the last week of hard training, this week is all about a dress rehearsal for your sportive. You’ll conquer 50 miles using the exact kit, clothing, bike setup and fueling strategy that you’ll use on your sportive. It’s always tempting to treat yourself to a new set of tyres, shorts or flashy jersey for your big day but you should always stick with what you’ve tried and tested in training.

Depending on your chosen cross training activity, this week gives you the option of an additional bike session. Be honest about how you’ve been coping with the training load and only add in this session if you’ve been recovering well and are feeling strong. There’s no point in adding an extra session in just for the sake of it if your core workouts suffer. Remember it’s quality of training not quantity that’ll get you results.

Last week was your toughest yet, so make the most of your Monday rest day and maybe consider booking in for a massage. From this week, you get the choice of an additional bike session but, if you’re already finding the schedule a struggle, leave it a week or so before adding it. Remember quality is far more important than quantity and if you’re unable to complete the workouts at the specified intensities, you won’t be gaining maximum benefit from them.
