Event 23 June 2013

The team behind the Dartmoor Classic have announced a women only ride to the sell out event! The Dartmoor Debutante, will allow hundreds to join in the most popular long-distance test in the UK.

The Mid-Devon Cycling Club, which already organises the sell-out Dartmoor Classic Sportive, has launched the Debutante for 200 local women who ride occasionally or who have just taken up the sport.

It will be held on the same day as the Classic – Sunday, June 23 – and will start (8.30am) just after the main field of 3,000 riders leave Newton Abbot Racecourse on their marathons of 100 miles or 100 kilometres.

But the Debutante will be over a shorter route of 50K.

The course will take in Bovey Tracey, Moretonhampstead, over the climb to Doccombe village and return via the Teign Valley.

Becky Kelly, of the Dartmoor Classic committee, said:

"The Classic is hugely popular and now sells out. However we know for a lot of people and women in particular, even the shorter 100km Dartmoor Classic route is extremely daunting.

"We hope this event will encourage women who already cycle a bit to stretch themselves and have a go. The route has a couple of challenging climbs, but is within the reach of occasional cyclists.

"Any roadworthy bike will do, whether that's a racing bike, a hybrid or a mountain bike."

The event is initially open only to residents of Torbay and Teignbridge (with TQ or EX postcodes), but if any places are still available by end of April it will be opened to people from further afield.

The route will also incorporate the new traffic-free cycle path from Bovey Tracey to Lustleigh, due for opening in late Spring.

Then, after a short section on the A382, it continues on the cycle path to Moretonhampstead.

Entry to the event costs £15 and includes use of a feed-station and a free goodie bag.
