McCallum Lands British Title

After taking silver on his two previous attempts at the British Omnium title, James McCallum (Endura RT) made no mistake at the third time of asking. The 2006 Commonwealth Games medallist has recently given up his job to focus on securing a place in the Scotland team for Delhi next year and he could not have made a better start to life as a full time rider securing the victory with a controlled performance in what was the feature event on day one of the DHL Meadowbank Grand Prix.
His only error came in the opening discipline, the flying lap, when he remained in the saddle throughout his ride – a mistake he reckoned could have cost him as much as half a second. It left him in fifth spot behind three sprinters and, perhaps crucially, was two hundredths slower than John McClelland (Agisko Viner), who was viewed as one of McCallum’s main rivals. Matt Haynes (City of Edinburgh) was quickest ahead of his team mates, Bruce Croall and Graeme Steen.
However, McClelland’s challenge came to grief in the Points race when he punctured and exceeded the five lap allowance to change his wheel, effectively ruling himself out of the title race. Croall also exited the competition after failing to finish. McCallum secured the win in that event to occupy top spot overall going into the elimination race. There he survived several fraught moments before emerging unscathed to contest the final sprint with team mate Kevin Barclay, who raised his hopes of a podium finish by taking the win.

Knowing exactly what was required in the final discipline, the 15 kilometre Scratch race, McCallum covered the breaks and stayed clear of trouble, crossing the line in fourth spot to seal the gold medal. Barclay took the Scratch race win that secured second place overall, while Haynes completed the podium. “For this year it’s really important for me to win things like this because it gives me a bit more weight with the Commonwealth Games coming up”, said the new champion. “For me it was important to approach each event as an individual race and not worry about the overall. I knew I had to make the distance races as hard as I could for all the sprinters and that worked out well.”
In the women’s Omnium, Charline Joiner (City of Edinburgh) took the honours ahead of her team mate Daisy Sherwood and Jennifer O’Reilly (Ravens CRC). Joiner made a stunning start to her challenge, setting a new Scottish record of 37.73 seconds in the 500 metres time trial to beat the previous holder Alison Chisholm into second spot and also had the better of her rival in their subsequent head to head clash.
Joiner found the going tough in the scratch race but clung on for fifth spot and she dug deep in the points race to take third place and clinch the overall win. Admitting to being surprised at her win, Joiner said, “I’m really happy with the Scottish record and winning the sprint because those are my events.
“The Scratch race didn’t go to plan – I tried to stay in the main bunch but I lost half a lap and that’s how it stayed to the end. The Points race was much better – I stuck up there, got a few points and won it.”

In the support events, Marloe Rodman (SiS) had a fruitful first visit to the Scottish capital, recording wins in the 5 kilometre Scratch, 10 kilometre Points, unknown distance and Devil. With the British Youth Omnium Series taking place in Manchester, there was a small Youth entry and of the riders that did compete, 8 year old Joanna Stewart (Discovery Juniors) was the crowd pleaser, battling gamely against older riders, before seeing her brother Mark take the win.
Day 1
The first day’s schedule was completed without interruption, but the rain came early in the second day’s programme. At that point the qualifying rides and opening round of the British Sprinters’ League had been completed, with Chris Pritchard (SiS) booking the top seeding after clocking 11.38 seconds to edge out Haynes (11.46 secs) and Croall (11.65 secs).
All three progressed through the opening matches and, with a 90 minute unscheduled break causing a revision to the timetable, the remaining rounds were contested over a single ride. In the quarter finals, Pritchard was almost caught out by a daring attack from Joe Sutherland (Discovery Juniors), with the Sheffield man having to work hard to snatch the win on the line. Haynes saw off his club mate Graeme Steen while Croall got the better of Rhydian Page (Cardiff CC) who nevertheless progressed to the last four via the repechage.

Pritchard had another close call against Page in the semi finals but there were no such issues for Haynes who had his match against Croall won by the time he entered the home straight. Croall was too good for Page in the third placed ride, leaving Haynes and Pritchard to battle it out for top spot, knowing that the winner would move to the top of the Sprinters’ League.
The pair remained locked in combat along the back straight and into the final turn where Haynes edged up the track and forced his rival to lose momentum then powered home to cross the line first. However, the commissaire ruled that Haynes had impeded Pritchard and reversed the decision, giving the SIS rider a five point cushion in the league table with two rounds left.
Pritchard was delighted with the result saying, “It went according to plan and that was the main thing.” And, on the issue that led to Haynes being demoted, he added, “Whether it was the wind or he was intentionally trying to push me out I don’t know. He went a little too far for my liking but obviously I didn’t have to put in a complaint because the commissaire saw it. All in all, a fair decision I think.”
At 26 years old, he believes that he still has a chance to compete at a higher level. “I’m not at my maximum yet. I’ve only been sprinting since March so I think there is plenty more to come.” And, with a mother from Renfrewshire, he qualifies for Scotland, and is drawn to the prospect of competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow five years from now.
Meanwhile, John McClelland atoned for his disappointment of the previous day in a fast paced Meadowbank Grand Prix event over 15 kilometres. Despite a string of attacks, most notably by Barclay, which had failed to break up the field, ten riders remained in contention at the bell. McCallum and defending champion Chris Bush displayed their bike handling skills as both remained upright after making contact on the penultimate bend but, with their attention temporarily deflected from the job in hand, McClelland struck with perfect timing and came home a wheel length clear of Nicky Hall (City of Edinburgh) and McCallum to claim the win. And, he had further success in the Derny-paced event where he again had just enough in hand to see off McCallum.
