Riders slipped and slid their way down the muddy descents of Margam

Sunday 10th Feb saw Round one of the Welsh Series taking place at a very wet and windy Margam Park.

Over 160 riders raced in what many described as the worst weather they have ever seen at a bike race. After consistent heavy rain all day Saturday, Saturday night and all day Sunday the water was pouring off the hill and down towards the arena.

All the riders who raced put in a great effort in the conditions but it was Dan Lewis (RAF CC) and Melanie Alexander (Scott Contessa) who took the honours in the Elite races. Other notable rides included James Nixon in 3rd place in his first race as an Elite and Lucy Allen finishing in 2nd in the Women's race despite being a first year junior. As well as the riders, there were of course a team of volunteers and organisers standing in the rain all day and thanks has to go to them: Jay and Maddie from Fully Sussed did a great job as did Jonny from Scrumptious Catering keeping everyone warm with hot drinks and bacon sandwiches. All the volunteer marshals were fantastic-they really did stand in the rain all day and the race can't go ahead without them so thanks to them.

Lastly, thanks to the sponsors who gave some great prizes. Senior and Junior Men's podium finishers went away with bags full of USN energy product, women's prizes are again supplied by AnaNichoola clothing and the under 16 prizes were all supplied by local retailer Tredz bikes who also provided tech support on the day.

Thanks again to everyone involved and we look forward to seeing you all again in Coed y Brenin in just a few weeks' time.
