Tell me more...

Interested?  To be a cycle marshal you should be an experienced London cyclist, if you fit the bill, you can volunteer to help the Mayor of London's Skyride participants during their ride across different stages of the route.

What if I live in outer London?

We need help from across the capital, as teams of cycle marshals will be leading riders in from surrounding London boroughs. Where they will then link up to a pit stop, giving riders a chance to have a bit of a break before continuing on to the central London course, which is free of motorised traffic.

As a Cycle marshal you'll then get to join in the fun and entertainment along the main Skyride route, before finally forming another team responsible for taking participants back to their original borough starting points.

Why are cycle marshals needed?

The Mayor of London's Skyride event is open to everyone, regardless of age or ability, with new cyclists and families being particularly welcome. We're hoping as a cycle marshal you can encourage anyone who has little or no experience of riding on busy roads, helping them gain confidence and feel less apprehensive on two wheels.

I'm interested. What are you looking for?

To be a cycle marshal you do need to be a confident cyclist who regularly tackles the London traffic. A knowledge of bike mechanics and people skills would also be useful for the role - if you're having fun, so will your group. Marshals must be 18 or older by 1 July 2009.

What are the responsibilities of a cycle marshal?

You need to available for the whole day to help us. As details and timings are confirmed we will keep you updated. More detail on all of this will be provided on training days and emailed out to volunteers as this year's event takes shape!

Why become a cycle marshal?

If you're a cycle marshal you're a huge help to the smooth running and safety of the Skyride. As well as helping thousands of Londoners have a happy and enjoyable day, you'll also be encouraging more to become regular cyclists in London. We want the Mayor of London's Skyride to inspire everyone who doesn't cycle often or at all, to use their bikes more often and promote a positive image of cyclists as road users.

All marshals will receive a training session before the event at, which will be held in several London boroughs. Training will cover how to lead a ride, details of how the day will unfold and what to do in an emergency. There will also be a chance to ask questions and an opportunity to meet other marshals.

Count me in. What do I do next?
