Peter King Receives CBE at Buckingham Palace
Posted: 15 December 2009
British Cycling's Executive Director Peter King attended an Investiture Ceremony on Friday at Buckingham Palace to receive his honour of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) awarded to him earlier this year in the Queen's New Year's Honours list.
Peter King has played an instrumental role in serving British Cycling as the CEO for 12 years, positioning the organisation as one of the most successful governing bodies in the UK before stepping down earlier this year.
Speaking about picking up his CBE, he said: "Being here to pick up this award is a real honour. I am proud to find myself following in the footsteps of so many great athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers who have been honoured similarly in previous years.
"Leading British Cycling for 12 years and working with the hundreds of volunteers across the country who make our sport happen every day was a massive honour in itself. I was fortunate enough to build a terrific team of loyal, dedicated and professional staff that had constant support from committed and knowledgeable Board members, led by the hardest working president in British sport, Brian Cookson OBE.
"I was also able to call on the energy and enthusiasm of thousands of volunteer officials and club coaches all over the country, all of whom have contributed to the re-incarnation of the sport of cycling in the UK over recent times. To all of these wonderful people I dedicate this honour. "
Peter King was also part of a specialist panel that recently chose fifty names to be inducted into British Cycling's Hall of Fame, marking the organisation's fiftieth anniversary.
