Brian Cookson Elected to the UCI Board

British Cycling's President, Brian Cookson OBE, has today been appointed to the UCI's (International Cycling Union) Management Committee, at the organisation's Annual Congress held at the Road World Championships in Switzerland.

Brian was nominated for the position at the UEC (European Cycling Union) Congress in Poland earlier this year when he received the second highest number of votes and became one of eight European nominees for the job.
The appointment has put British Cycling at the centre of the UCI's strategic processes, as the UCI's Management Committee is central to driving the UCI's direction on high-profile issues such as anti-doping and standards of sports governance in cycling.

The committee is a democratically elected body at the heart of the UCI and Brian's presence on it as a member over the next four years will keep British Cycling up to speed with the UCI's policy direction and give it a powerful lobbying voice at the top of the sport.

Brian said: "I am delighted to have been elected and I'd like to thank those national delegates who voted for me. It shows once again how highly regarded British Cycling is at the highest level of the sport and I look forward to assisting the UCI in developing cycling at home and abroad."

Pat McQuaid, UCI's President, commented: "I would like to congratulate Brian on his appointment and I look forward to working with him more closely. I know he will work hard to further the UCI's objectives such as further globalising the sport."

Brian has been involved in cycling for over forty years, having started off as a competitor before moving into volunteering and working as a commissaire and race official. He was first elected to national office in 1984 and became the President of British Cycling in 1996.

He is a qualified UCI International Commissaire and a member of the Executive Committee of the British Olympic Association. In 2008 Brian was awarded the Order of Officer of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen in the New Year Honours List 2008.
