Pfeiffer Georgi clinched an emphatic victory in the inaugural round of the British Cycling | Junior Women’s Road Series at Witham on the Hill.

The Liv Halo rider, from Berkeley, rode away from the rest of the field as the Witham Hall Junior Women’s Grand Prix entered its second lap and ended up finishing more than five minutes to the good.

Post-race, Georgi explained that she never actually intended to go for broke.

“That was really hard,” she said.

“I was out there on my own for about 20 miles or so. That wasn’t the plan – we were just trying to make it hard as a team.

“It was a good start. We were all working to try and make it hard.

“I was just going to work for my teammates because they’ve done so much for me this season.”

Early throes

Kim Baptista (Torelli-Kuota-Brother) took the bunch to take second place, just holding off Corrine Side (Racing Chance Foundation), who was third.

Sixty riders took to the start line to roll out of the picturesque Lincolnshire village.

Team Ireland and Liv Halo dictated the pace but it was an early attack from Marie Lynn (Boompods EDCO) and Isabel Ellis (Backstedt/HotChillie) as the race entered Ryhall that ignited proceedings – their break was to be short-lived, however, and the pair were soon back in the fold.

Georgi takes control

As the race entered lap two, Georgi moved the head of the field, looking to lift the speed of the main field and, by her own admission, it was to repay her teammates and help them move away from the peloton, but no-one was able to stay the pace.

With no real co-ordinated chase by the peloton, the lone leader had all-but secured the victory with almost two laps remaining.

April Tacey (Team 22), who took the win in 2017, moved to the head of the bunch, looking to chase the leader down, but Georgi’s team dictated proceedings as the Liv Helo rider raced home in style.
