The countdown is on to Wales’ biggest cycling sportive with just 100 days to go until Velothon Wales 2016 on Sunday 22 May.

Cyclists from around the UK have been snapping-up places to take part in the 140km completely closed-road event, when up to 18,000 riders will take to the streets of South Wales.

The inaugural Velothon Wales in 2015 was a huge hit with cyclists, bringing more than 10,000 riders of all ages abilities to the area to tackle the stunning route.

It benefitted the local economy by an estimated £2m and raised in excess of £300,000 for good causes.

Matt Newman, chief executive of Velothon Wales 2016 organisers Run 4 Wales, said:

“An extensive amount of work has already taken place to ensure this year’s Velothon Wales will build on the success of the debut event in 2015.

“As we enter the final 100 days of preparations, everyone at Run 4 Wales is excited about delivering Wales’ biggest and best cycling sportive.

“We anticipated a big response from the cycling community and we are looking forward to giving a big Welsh welcome to thousands of riders from all over the UK.”

Riders will take on the very same 140km course as some of the world’s best pro teams in the UCI classified 1.1 professional road race and the final route will be confirmed later this month.

General entry places for Velothon Wales have been selling quickly. There are a limited number of spaces still remaining at Velothon Wales.

Residents and businesses who will be affected by the road closures associated with the event will start to receive letters detailing closure times and alternative arrangements from the end of this month.

Velothon Wales 2016 is supported by Welsh Government, Welsh Cycling, Cardiff Council, Newport City Council, Monmouthshire County Council, Torfaen County Borough Council and Caerphilly County Borough Council.
