Great Britain’s Scott Davies and Grant Ferguson made the key selection on stage one of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour and are now two of only 21 riders within seconds of the lead.

With the remainder of the field now over 20-minutes down, the prologue results were rendered irrelevant on a stage when a group was allowed to get away and build an insurmountable lead.

Davies – the under-23 British time trial champion – and British mountain bike champion Ferguson were part of the move which went clear on the first climb of the 146-kilometre stage.

They both finished in the second group, after Meyer and Joseph Cooper attacked and gained ten seconds before the finish.

Gabriel Cullaigh and Josh Edmondson finished the stage 21 minutes down on the leaders, four minutes ahead of the peloton which contained Jake Kelly and Chris Lawless.

With three stages remaining, the next test is expected to be left to the sprinters, before a return to the hills on the final two days.
