Hard work and dedication paid off for riders from the Dragon Riders BMX Club when they competed in the 3rd round of the Blackpool BMX Club winter race series recently, making an impression on the locals and taking the honours in several races.

Youngsters from the Rhyl based BMX Club have been training hard over the winter with coaching sessions from four times British BMX Champion Martin Ogden and, four times World BMX Champion and Olympian Shanaze Reade.

Jameson Pero, 10 of Llandudno and a pupil at Ysgol Deganwy only started racing in November and made his mark, taking wins in each of his three motos and the outright win in the finals. An avid fan of BMX racing, Jameson now heads the Novice 11 year old male category.

In the Novice 12 year old male category, Dragon Riders fielded four of the eight starters and competition was fierce between the club mates, but Holywell’s Rhys Proffitt, 11 dominated the motos taking a run of wins and was unstoppable in the final.

Ryan Evans, 11 of ColwynBay and fellow Ysgol Eirias pupil, Max Cryer dug deep and had a great series of battles all day, Evans recovering from missing the first moto with a puncture to take a well-earned fourth place in the final, whilst consistency has put Cryer at the top of the league table.

Louie Ellis, 11 of Prestatyn has been working on his stamina training over the last few weeks and this paid dividends on the long Blackpool track, Ellis finishing second in the final and pressing Proffitt hard in the motos.

Avid mountain biker Nicholas Harding, 13 of Ruthin recently took up BMX riding and his no-fear experience gained in downhill mountain biking stood the youngster in good stead as he took a clean sweep with victories in the three motos and the final at his first race event.

David Atkinson of Bodelwyddan is finding his feet again after a long break from BMX, but the 13 year old had a steady run taking 4th place in his motos and making the final to finish 3rd in the league.

In the Novice 15 year old Male category, Ysgol Glan Clwyd pupils Iwan Brisbane and Jack Jones, both aged 14 and from Prestatyn resumed their titanic battle at the head of the group, Jones having gained the advantage after the previous round which Brisbane missed. It was nip and tuck in all three motos, the pair locking elbows in the turns, but Brisbane managed to hold off Jones to take the three moto victories and the final with Jones finishing second, but doing enough to hold onto the overall league lead.

In the Expert Vets, Sion Growcott of Llandudno competed in only his second expert race after moving up from the novices in November and had a mixed bag in the motos, but got into gear in the final to take the victory and heads up the league table.

The enthusiasm and effort from the Dragon Riders was plain to see and they made up nearly a tenth of the competitors. Vice Chairman, Steve Ellis said “We train hard each Monday and Wednesday night at Marsh Tracks in Rhyl and the results speak for themselves and the Club continues to grow.

We’re all very proud of the achievements our members have made in their first year as a club and we’ll be preparing now for the next round of theBlackpoolseries in January.”
