The evening of 3rd September saw a group of young track cyclists assemble to try the sport of Cycle Speedway. Their committment levels were never in doubt although the skills required were very different to life on the indoor velodrome! After a mostly tentative start the speeds rapidly increased as riders began to gain confidence on bikes with no brakes and a frewheel, the 81 metre flat cinder track providing much less grip than the wooden, steeply banked track with which they are most familiar.

A full race format was provided by Colin Simmons after some simple instructions and practice laps. Experienced riders from Newport Cycle Speedway Club bravely mixed it with the new riders to add extra excitement to a great evenings racing. Eventual winner Zac took home an impressive trophy in the youth racing after being challenged strongly by Ollie who unfortunately crashed in the final after a thoroughly impressive evening.

Also taking part were 2 brave mums who raced head to head in a 3 race card. Eventual winner Jayne also recieving a trophy which is now taking pride of place on her mantlepiece.

Many thanks to Colin and his Newport Speedway riders for allowing us this opportunity and to Courtney Rowe for organising things.
