Fatal road traffic collision A4042:
death of serving police officer Sergeant Steve Burt
Sadly Welsh Cycling recieved news on Friday about an accident that occured on the A4042 late Thursday night. Gwent Police can confirm the identity of the cyclist who died as a result of a road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 10.50pm yesterday, Thursday 19th May 2011, as serving officer Police Sergeant Steve Burt.
Mr Burt has been involved with improving the safety of cycle events on the highways in the Gwent area and the news has come as a shock many invloved in the sport.
Sergeant Burt, 53, was one in a group of cyclists riding on the A4042, when he was in collision with a car at Llanover. The group was travelling in the direction of Pontypool, the car was travelling in the opposite direction towards Abergavenny. The car, a blue Volkswagen Golf, was driven by a 77 year old man from the Crickhowell area.
Sergeant Burt, from New Inn, is survived by his wife Debra; two daughters aged 25 (Sian and Louise) and a son aged 22 (Jonathan). He had served with Gwent Police in a variety of roles for 27 years. Steve received his long service and good conduct medal in 2005.
