Sup6r Six Three For Fife

Posted: 5 May 2011 | Event: 8 May 2011
Words by: Colin Renton

James McCallum (Rapha-Condor Sharp) bids to make it two in a row when he lines up for Sunday's third race in Scottish Power Renewables Sup6r Six Series which takes place in Fife.

McCallum showed his class over the tough Rosneath circuit last time out and will be itching to make it a double in the 75 mile event which starts in Methil at 11am and is incorporated into the Duncan McGregor Memorial Road Race.

However, there will be plenty of challengers looking to thwart the Commonwealth Games medallist, not least series leader Robbie Hassan (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team), the 19 year old whose fine form this season continued when he was the leading Scot at last month's Tour Doon Hame.

Hassan's nearest challenger in the overall standings is his team mate Gary Hand, runner up in last year's Duncan McGregor and winner of the inaugural Sup6r Six Series, while others likely to come into contention include Robin Wilkins (Velo Ecosse) and Dave Henderson (GT Racing UK) who both performed well at Rosneath, as well as Ben Greenwood, a team mate of McCallum.

Local knowledge could be a factor in an event, which is a memorial to the father of race organiser Callum McGregor and is now in its fifth year. If that proves to be he case, it should play into the hands of Gary McCrae and Andrew Brierley, who will be racing in the colours of Team Leslie Bike Shop- Right Move Windows, and will be out to impress on home roads.

The 80 strong field will roll out from Jax Health Club in Leven and the neutralised zone will end at the edge of the town. The route comprises three laps of a large circuit that follows the A915 to Largo Ward, with an ascent of Largo Law, which is where the hill primes will be contested. And the distance is made up by one circuit of a smaller lap behind Ceres. Sprint primes will be up for grabs at a point between Pitscottie and Ceres on each of the first two laps.

The B race will be contested over two large laps, 50 miles in total, and gets underway at 11.10am. Junior rider Ross Green (Stewartry Wheelers) currently leads the B Series from Geoffrey Martin (Nevis RT), while Lee Craigie (Torq Performance) heads the women's category ahead of Laura Murray (Velocity 44 Stirling).
