Sup6r Six wins for McDougall and McCallum

Article by: Colin Renton

Just days after returning from the ten day Tour of Taiwan, James McCallum (Rapha Condor Sharp) showed no signs of jet lag as he chalked up his first win of the season when he took the honours in the second race of the Scottish Power Renewables Sup6r Six Series at Helensburgh.

McCallum was well to the fore throughout the 72 mile event and had enough in reserve to sprint home several lengths clear of Liam Cowie (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team) and Robin Wilkins (Equipe Velo Ecosse/Montpelliers), who had featured in the final selection along with Dave Henderson (GT Racing UK).

A circuit that was to prove a stern test for a high class field that included four members of the men's road race team that competed at the Commonwealth games in Delhi last year, took its toll on the first climb with a couple of riders already feeling the pace, and a crash within the opening ten miles put paid to the hopes of several contenders, among them Callum Wilkinson (Endura RT) who needed treatment at the roadside for his injuries.

McCallum and his former team mate Evan Oliphant (Endura RT) were prominent in the early attacks, together with Cowie, who had also raced aggressively in the opening race at Gifford and was again looking lively.

However, all efforts to escape were nullified and the field was together passing through Peaton for the first time although the rough road surface along the water's edge ensured the service vehicle was kept busy.

Most attacking efforts were again nullified throughout the second circuit but eight riders managed to carve out a lead of around 30 seconds approaching the Green Kettle Roundabout. Evident at the head of that bunch were Gordon Murdoch (Team Cycleane) and Davie Lines (Endura RT), although their efforts to break away were eventually foiled.

And the decisive move came on the final lap when the quartet who would ultimately contest the win finally broke clear. Cowie was first to make his bid for glory but McCallum, who had been forced to battle back into the group after a last lap puncture, covered the move and eventually powered clear along the esplanade in Helensburgh to take the honours.

"I didn't really feel that great", the winner admitted afterwards. "I got back from Taiwan on Wednesday. Obviously I've got good legs from that but I've got a bit of a head cold.

"The wind was the biggest factor but I think a lot of people underestimate the course - you forgot just how hard this course is.

"But I was pretty confident all the way. The course over in Taiwan had a lot of climbing so the climbs here are nothing compared to that.

Acknowledging the efforts of the race organiser, he added, "Jeanette (Hazlett) has done a fantastic job and she has revived this race. It was always one of the classic races and it's nice to now see it as part of the Sup6r Six."

And he also praised the supporters who had backed the event on an afternoon which had its share of sunshine, rain and even hailstones , saying, "I was really pleased with the support and coming down to the finish you really felt you were coming into a proper finish. It's all down to Jeanette and her great little group, and the Ivy and the West of Scotland Cycling association for all their hard work."

For Robbie Hassan (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team) there was no repeat of his win in the opening round, but the local teenager battled throughout the race and took 11th place. "It was tough", he said. "I was just getting marked up all the time - I didn't have any room but I gave it my all."

Earlier in the day, Ewan McDougall (Elgin CC) had produced a similar effort in the B race, coming home several lengths clear of Peter Hale (Falkirk BC) and Raymond Reidy (Team Leslie Bikeshop - Right Move Windows).

Meanwhile, Jane Barr (Velocity 44 Stirling) went one better than she had done in the opening race when she was the leading woman rider.

The race organisers are grateful to Scottish Power Renewables, Helensburgh Cycles, The Bike Wear House, Strathclyde Police, Sports Development and the Roads Department of Argyll and Bute Council and the members and committee of Helensburgh Sailing Club who gave the use of their clubhouse as race headquarters.

The series continues on Sunday May 8 with the Callum MacGregor Memorial Road Race.
