SuP6R Six Hits Helensburgh

Posted: 29 March 2011
Article by: Colin Renton

Scotland's top domestic riders and a clutch of the country's rising stars will converge on Helensburgh this weekend to contest the second round of Scottish Cycling's premier road competition, the Scottish Power Renewables Sup6r Six Series at Rosneath.

Heading the 80 strong entry is Scottish road race champion Evan Oliphant (Endura Racing Team), who won the overall title last year and has just returned from racing at a major stage event in Italy. He is joined by James McCallum (Rapha Condor/Sharp), Ross Creber (Cycle Premier/Metaltek) and David Lines (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team), who were all colleagues of Oliphant at last year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Also lining up will be their fellow Scottish internationals Gareth Montgomerie (GT Racing UK) and Gary Hand, who is a team mate of Lines.

Among a host of promising youngsters is local teenager Robbie Hassan (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team) and Oliphant's colleague Callum Wilkinson (Endura RT), who recently competed at the Tour of Murcia in Spain, where he lined up alongside Tour de France champion Alberto Contador, and competed in France last week.

"Evan and Callum are pleased that the team's schedule allows them to race", said Endura official Martin Steele. "Both riders are heavily involved in Endura Racing's dual race programme. Evan has recently returned from the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali in Italy, whilst Callum has been in France for the Tour de Normandie."

Hassan underlined his burgeoning talent when he won the opening race in the series and the 19 year old from Dumbarton will be hoping to make local knowledge count as he bids for a repeat on Sunday.

Other rising stars include Grant Ferguson (Boardman Elite), a member of the Great Britain Academy, and Greg Brown (Dooleys RT), who is a contender for the overall junior title

The racing programme, which is hosted by Glasgow Ivy Cycling Club, gets underway at 10am with a 32 mile support race designed to offer development opportunities for relative novices to the sport, as well as a series for veterans and women. The growing number of female riders is reflected in a strong entry for that category, including Commonwealth Games rider Jane Barr (Velocity 44 Stirling) who is desperate to improve on her second place finish in the opening race. The support event should finish on the seafront in Helensburgh around 11.30am.

The main contest is scheduled to start at noon and finish around 3pm. The route takes the riders from Helensburgh, through Rhu, Faslane, Coulport, Cove, Kilcreggan, Garelochhead and includes three ascents of Whistlefield Road before returning to finish on the seafront, a total distance of 71 miles.

In addition to the title sponsor, the event also benefits from the backing of Helensburgh Cycles and The Bike Wear House.

Sunday's race is the product of months of hard work by organiser Jeanette Hazlett, who said, "Although Ivy CC are the organising club, it's been a real joint effort with all the cycling clubs in West of Scotland helping with their time and race equipment.

"And the local community have also been great - a special mention for the Cafe at Kilgreggan whose scones have kept me going over the past few weeks while I have been finalising details for the race. We are also indebted to representatives of other sports, who have helped us out, particularly the local sailing club which we are using as the race headquarters.

"Hopefully the weather will be kind to us, and it would be fantastic if we can get a good turn out on the side of the road to cheer on the riders."

The race organisers, Ivy Cycling Club, are grateful to the following for their support and assistance:

Scottish Power Renewables, Helensburgh Cycles, Strathclyde Police, Sports Development and the Roads Department of Argyll and Bute Council and the members and committee of Helensburgh Sailing Club.

Glasgow Nightingale Cycling Club, Lomond Roads Cycling Club, Glasgow Wheelers, Glasgow United, Vortex Race Team, West of Scotland Cycle Association, National Escort Group, British Red Cross, SC Photofinishing Team.
