With the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships fast approaching, the Power of the Bike Club Activation Fund is supporting a further six events across Scotland, with applications remaining open for other would be event organisers.
The Fund is still welcoming applications so we would like to share the next six events with you for some more inspiration if you are thinking of putting on an event.
Dundee Dragons are planning an Experience the Worlds event on adaptive bikes this summer. At the end of the session, they are including a race element to the day by allowing the participants to complete timed laps of the velodrome or athletics track depending on ability. The Tayside-based club are organising this adaptive cycling event for people with physical and sensory disabilities to Experience The Worlds in Dundee at their very own cycling velodrome and athletics track at the Regional Performance Centre. The Fund covers the cost of velodrome hire and allows the club to provide some participant goodie bags.
Glasgow's Western Titans BMX Racing Club are holding a fun day with various activities to raise awareness for the club and discipline. They will have volunteers talking about the club, coaches giving trial sessions, basic bike maintenance and the chance to ride the track with some of their members. There will also be a masterclass from their most experienced rider who is currently competing at world level. Scottish Cycling are proving funding for marketing materials, merchandise and food for the event.
Ythan CC are holding Ellon Bike week which will involve a week of scheduled cycling activities. Starting with a sportive on the 13th of August, councilors on bikes, a mini cross race, disability cycling, e-bike testing session, family led rides culminating in a crit race for youths as part of the Youth series on the 20th August. Certainly, an action-packed week of cycling! We are helping to provide buffs to give out at events during the week.
Westhill Bike Club are organising a local bike ride open to all members of the community. The ride will cover 13miles around the local countryside with a halfway stop for refreshments. Money raised from the entry fees will all go to local charity. This year the beneficiary will be the proposed new local chapter of Cycling Without Age Scotland (CWAS). We are providing some funds for the hire of a car park to set off from, refreshments and certificates for the participants and some new directional signs for the event.
In the North, Orkney CC are hosting a Tri-County/Inter County weekend on the 26-27th of August. Riders from Shetland, Caithness and Orkney will compete in a 25mile TT, 10 mile TT and 3 mile hill climb for points towards an overall best team Inter-County Trophy. There will be participation medals and trophies for riders in each discipline. The event is open to any club member from the three counties. We are assisting with venue hire, post event catering, marshalling costs, awards & participation medals and Marketing for the event. Wick CC had also asked for funds towards this event to cover travel expenses to allow their riders to compete.
