TWO days after his Tour Series success at Canary Wharf, Tobyn Horton (Madison Genesis) powered to another London win in the Schwalbe Elite Criterium at the eighth Jupiter London Nocturne, while Nicola Juniper (Echelon Rotor) claimed victory in the Rapha Elite Women's Criterium on another fantastic day of racing at Smithfield Market.

Horton spent the second half of the men's race in a group of four who maintained a ten-second gap over the peloton on the technical circuit.

Luckless Adam Duggleby (Wheelbase Altura MGD) crashed out three corners from the end as Guernsey-based Horton, 27, cranked up the pressure, opening up a gap of around five lengths over Felix English (Rapha Condor JLT) who took second place ahead of James McCullum (NFTO).

As darkness quickly descended over the city, the first few laps were a measured affair with the line of riders in single file through the twisting course. Kristian House (Rapha Condor JLT) made an appearance on the front early on, dictating the pace until the decisive four-man break went clear.

The quartet worked efficiently to maintain their lead despite repeated attempts to chase them down - Team Raleigh, who were without a rider in the break, pressing hard at the front but unable to make an impression, and as the lap count came down to two it became clear the leaders were fighting for the podium between themselves.

Ed Clancy (Rapha Condor JLT) came over the line in fourth place with last year’s winner Tom Scully (Madison Genesis) in seventh and notable riders, such as Tyler Farrar (Garmin Sharp) in 33rd, finishing well down the result.

Juniper, 32, from Brentwood in Essex, outsprinted Gabriella Shaw (Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International) to win the women’s event with Katie Curtis (Starley Primal Pro Cycling) just behind in third place but ten seconds clear of the chasing field.

Curtis initiated the winning move in a fast-run race which was reduced in distance following a crash in one of the earlier races – the break also including Katie Archibald (Pearl Izumi Sports Tours), who lost her chance when she tangled with barriers, twisting her bars, inside the last five laps.

The first race of the day, the Leigh Day Kermesse was won by Alex Minting (Neon Velo) in a sprint from George Wood (Richardson Trek RT) and Ben Simmons (Team Wiggle).

A first for the meeting, the Brooks Retro Criterium was won by Thomas Zittel on his early 60s Claud Butler Super Torino while the inaugural TFL hire bike race produced the tightest sprint of the night as Ryan Carus edged out Leo Tong by half a length.

Among the first to assemble his bike after a 30metre run, Keith Henderson – suitably attired in a smart black suit – won the five-la folding bike race, while Richard Thoday repeated last year’s victory in the iconic Penny Farthing race.

The Ignitr City Criterium went to Richard Mardle of Stott and May with three finishers in the top five seeing Wiggle take home the coveted team prize.

Another of last year’s winners featured heavily in Condor’s Track Bike Criterium, but after looking confident throughout, Wayne Crombie was beaten in a sprint by Paolo Bravini.
