Wigan racer Michael Ashurst (Biketreks Racing Academy) secured victory in round 19 of the CDNW League staged on the Bashall Eaves circuit in Lancashire on Sunday.

Ashurst, 25, crossed the line just one second ahead of his breakaway rival James Gullen (Hope Factory Racing), while Giles Drake (Herbalife-Leisure Lakes) took third, another three seconds back.

After the elite and first category riders had caught the longmarkers, it was James Gullen who had attacked first at the top of the hill, and only Ashurst and Drake could stay with him.

The trio were out in front for much of the race, with the bunch coming home almost two and a half minutes behind the break.

For Ashurst, it was his first win in this season’s CDNW Road Race League, having finished second several times – most recently in round 18 a fortnight ago, as well as in round 16, also in August.

He also showed his good form earlier in the season when he finished third overall in the prestigious four-stage Ras Mumhan in Ireland in April.

“It’s great to get a win, and in my last race of the season too,” said Ashurst. “The race went to plan really. Once we had caught the third cats Gullen attacked, and we got on his wheel.

“We worked well together and it came down to a sprint. Gullen attacked twice on the last lap but couldn’t drop us, and on the last bit he attacked again. This time I went straight round him and held it for a very long sprint to the finish!”
