Fourth category junior Mike Lear (VC Rutland) held off the big guns over the final laps to win the last round of the Northants CRA’s closed circuit handicap series at Rockingham Raceway.

Making full use of his allowance, the first-season 17-year-old Oakham novice was one of four riders from the women and juniors group to hang on to the second categories when they were caught for the first time and battled hard to stay in contact for long enough to be able to survive the closing stages on his own when finally shaken off.

First-time visitor Greg Mansell (Team UK Youth) led home the chasing pack to take second place ahead of Rio Paralympics hopeful Jozef Metelka (Beeline Bicycles RT) with Jamie Scott (MG-Maxifuel Pro Cycling) wrapping up the overall title in eighth place.

The Core Cycling Solutions award for the most improved rider over the 13-race series went to Wayne Tunnah (St Neots CC), whose exploits saw him rise from fourth to second category.
