Glendene CC rider Craig Nicholls took victory in the penultimate round of the Ford CC Summer Series at the Dunton Test Track in Essex.
But the battle for the overall series win was being played out behind him, with leader Mick Bath (API) taking second spot and Paul Spiceley (Glendene CC) finishing third on the day which means he is second, and just six points behind Bath heading into the final round.
A perfect summer’s evening attracted 50 riders, and as usual there was a hot pace from the off, with three riders opening up a small gap.
However the group was not large enough to stay away, and the bunch reformed before the Prime on lap four which was taken by Tim Savage (Maldon CC).
Following this the pace of the bunch fluctuated between strong attacks followed by lulls which made it particularly hard for some of the newcomers to this discipline of the sport.
The second prime after six laps was taken by Sam Brown (unattached), with the third and final one taken by Pete Stiff (Travers Bikes).
The final sprint to the line was hotly contested, with Craig Nicholls (Glendene CC) taking the win followed by Mick Bath (API) and Paul Spiceley (Glendene CC).
The overall standing are wide open with Mick Bath just 6 points in front of Paul Spiceley. The final race of the series on 8th August promises to be exiting!
