Part of a six-man break that went clear on the opening lap and was never caught, Felix Barker (St Ives CC) came out on top in the uphill finishing sprint to win Arbis-Colbert Cycles RT’s inaugural 60-mile Summer Road Race on a new circuit near Toddington, Bedfordshire.

The move came towards the end of the first of the six and a half laps and despite several attempts to bridge the gap, the frontrunners never really looked like being caught by the bunch.

Barker took the prime sprint at the end of lap two and, completed by Gunther Zechmann (London Phoenix), Doug Coleman (CC Luton), Simon Henley (Team Corley Cycles) and Jack Beezer (Edinburgh RC) with the sixth member dropping back, the leaders had extended their lead to over a minute by the end of the third lap.

An extremely fast downhill section on the course played into the hands of the five leaders and they steadily increased their advantage over the remaining laps, eventually crossing the line over two minutes ahead of the chasing main bunch.

Barker, 19, attacked 100 metres out on the crest of the short but steep finishing hill to record his first road win of the year with Beezer on his wheel and almost catching him on the line.
