Breaking away on the second of six laps of the Stags Head circuit, Tom Alliban (1st Chard Wheelers) held the rest of the field at bay to record a fine solo victory in Taw Velo’s 44-mile veterans road race in Devon.

The 52-year-old, from Crewkerne stretched out his lead to a maximum 1-40 and held the advantage to the finish to claim his first victory of the season after returning from a two-year break.

Morris Elphick (Exeter Wheelers) proved strongest on the uphill finish to take the bunch sprint for second place ahead of Dave Rutty (VC Bristol).
