Michael Garner (Birkenhead North End CC) produced a strong uphill sprint to take victory in the Paramount CRT Stans Cycles Summer Road Race in Shropshire on Sunday.

At the start of the race, two riders manage to get away and manage to open up a gap of 50 seconds on the main bunch, with a small group of chasers in-between.

But the two were caught by a group of six and the leading group managed to get 30 seconds ahead of the peloton.

Then, on the sixth lap, the field came back together to ensure an exciting finale to the contest.

But it was Garner who, with 500m to go, toiled up the hill to take victory from Andrew Tamplin (Base2racecycles.co.uk) by five seconds. Mark McLean (Out of the Saddle) was a further three seconds back in third.

Results:

1 Michael Garner (Birkenhead North End CC)
2 Andrew Tamplin (Base2RaceCycles.co.uk) @5sec
3 Mark Mclean (Out of the Saddle) @8sec
4 Shaun Hammond (Wolverhampton Wheelers) @10sec
