The opening 10-mile time trial proved decisive as Vanessa Whitfield (VC St Raphael) established a 16-second lead which she held to the finish for overall victory in Holme Valley Wheelers’ two-stage race in West Yorkshire.

Whitfield finished safely in a leading group of 13 riders in the concluding 33-mile road stage, over five laps of a circuit based on Birds Edge, to preserve her advantage over sprint winner Joanne Blakeley (Champion System/Maxgear/Base) with Gina Riley (Chester RC) holding on to third place overall.
