Report: Snowdon Sports

Away in a three-man break which was caught two laps from the finish, Paul Allen (Dinnington RC) had enough in reserve to win the bunch sprint at the end of Welland Valley CC’s 36-mile A A Brown road race to land his first win in three years.

Some 35 riders were still in contention after 13 laps of a 2.8-mile country lane course in Leicestershire with 39-year-old Allen, from Barnsley, taking the verdict ahead of Stuart Thompson (Hinckley CRC) – still looking for a victory after his third second place of the year – and Will Scott (Bonito Squadra Corse).

Two riders came down in the sprint after a touch of wheels, Warren Drew (Rockingham Forest Wheelers) suffering a broken collarbone and Mark Blakeley (Peterborough CC) lacerations.

Hans van Nierop (Welland Valley CC) was off the front for a lap, his lead hovering at around ten seconds before he was reeled back in, and Allen was also away for a lap with two other riders for company before the bunch pulled them back in.
