Location: East Hanningfield, Essex
Event: 19 May 2013
Report: Snowdon Sports

Attacking six miles from the finish, Andrew Hastings (Finchley RT) rode away from the rest of a four-man break to celebrate his first Eastern Region road race title after eight and a half laps of a testing East Hanningfield circuit.

Fourth in 2009, Hastings underlined the form that earned him victory in the Bob Whitear Memorial event a week earlier as he opened up a healthy gap over second-placed Roger Maidment (East London Velo) who, in turn, pulled away from Jamie Caldwell (MG-Maxifuel Pro Cycling) on the finishing climb.

The field began to split on the opening lap with five riders initially going clear but reduced to four when Vince Divine (Finchley RT) crashed out before a group of around 15 riders came across to them.

Their advantage over the main field hovered at around 30 seconds as attacks came and went off the front, but with two laps to go the decisive move was made when three riders – including Maidment and Caldwell - clipped away with Hastings then closing a gap of 100 metres to join them.

“We put the hammer down to get a good gap and then with six miles to go I attacked and rode away to the finish,” said the 32-year-old winner, from Ware in Hertfordshire. “It was quite a tough day and I’m very happy to have won.

“I’ve timed my form very well, or at least, my coach has – I wanted to win the championship so he’s geared everything around me being fresh for today and it’s worked a treat.

“I’m doing the national 10-mile time trial championship next week and then I’ve got a ride for Corley Cycles in the Milk Race up in Nottingham before the Beaumont Trophy Premier Calendar at the end of the month, so there is plenty to look forward to.”
