Location: Cotehele House, Cornwall
Event: 10 November 2012
Report: Tom McCann/Plymouth Corinthian CC

Plymouth Corinthian’s inaugural King of the Hill event – which saw riders battle up the climb near Cotehele House in Cornwall – was won by Certini’s Dexter Hurlock on Saturday.

This was a great event with over 40 competitors entering from many different clubs. The weather was a mix of beautiful sunshine and torrential showers. Although it was a fairly short climb (by hill climb standards), it was very steep and a real lung-buster!

Riders from Plymouth Corinthian CC included myself (Tom Cann), Adrian Sluman, Stephen Copp, James Spenser and Richie Rowland.

The format was to do an initial solo timed run, which would then give a placing and seeding for the main race which was a dual race-off eliminator heats (fastest v slowest), with the winners progressing through rounds: top 16, quarter finals, semi finals and final.

Adrian did a fantastic ride to win the timed run (and therefore also winning the PCCC Hill Climb Trophy for 2012). Of the other PCCC riders, Stephen came an excellent ninth, James placed well in 16th ahead of me and Richie.

James and Richie fought bravely in their race-offs but were up against tough opposition and their day of racing ended there. I made it through my first race-off by pipping my challenger at the top but then I faded badly in the next round, very fatigued. Stephen fared very well in the race-off format to reach the quarter final only to be beaten by Adrian.

Adrian took advantage of his top seeding to cruise through the early rounds, and fought hard to make it right through to the final. With shorter recovery time between races as the rounds progressed, a total of six races up the hill finally took its toll on Adrian who was beaten in the final by a very strong Dexter Hurlock from team Certini, well done to him and to all who entered!

The fastest lady was Catherine Newton from Newquay Velo CC.

A special prize was presented our youngest rider, 10 year old George Mitchelmore who did a fantastic ride against all of his older peers and looks like a great prospect for the future!

Thanks to Steve Toze for organising this great event and his initial idea for the dual race-off eliminator format which made an exciting change to the traditional timed hill-climb. Thanks also to all the helpers, marshals, time keepers and ‘pusher-offers’ and to British Cycling for supporting this new format.

Thanks to the enthusiastic support from the National Trust who did a great job in supporting this event and allowing us to ride up their hill and for marshaling too.

Looking forward to next year!
