Royal London 360 Youth League Round 11 - Tuesday 26 June 2012
Report: Dot Tilbury

Despite the damp and misty conditions, there was a good turnout of 233 hardy competitors at the NSC last Tuesday night for round 11 of Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man's youth league.

In the novices race Sydney-Ella Patterson pipped Jessica Rich for the honours. Leading boy Zack Bellhouse edged out Fearne Bregazzi for third and Colby Newbold beat sisters Chloe and Caitlyn Hampson to the line for fifth. Emma Nippress, newcomer Keelan Redfearn and Summer Peters rounded off the top ten.

Orry Lund kept series leader Sam Cowin at bay to bag maximum points in the born 2007 & later category. Cian Howard was a safe third and Charlie Morris shaded Alex Andrew for fourth. Rio Kelly outgunned Lewin Scarffe in the bunch sprint for sixth and Hannah Spencer overtook Summer Curphey in the closing stages to claim the girls' award in 12th spot.

Notching up his seventh success of the series, Ivan Sorby rode clear of breakaway partner Zachary Dowson for a clear victory the born 2006 event. Cian Jackson was too quick for Corey Peters in the rush for third and Owen Collins escaped from the chasing pack to secure fifth. James Moore ousted Charlie Convery for sixth and Tomas Flowers led first girl Sophie Smith home for eighth.

A last lap attack gave Niall Colquitt the edge over fellow frontrunners Oliver Sykes, Harry Kneen and Chloe Dillon in the born 2005 class. Tyler Annis overcame Harry Boyle, Chloe Comaish and Mairi Harrison in the tussle for fifth, while Cormac Ewan and Luca Moretta led in a second wave of pursuers to complete the top ten leader board.

In the born 2004 race Zac Walker outsprinted Dillon Dowson for the honours. Cameron Dudley and Toby Craig broke free from a five-strong chasing group to take third and fourth respectively, with Joshua Dudley hanging onto fifth ahead of the fast closing quartet consisting of Nathan Slack, Callum Crellin, Nancy Wheeler (1st girl) and Kiera Prentice.

Percy Hampton had to fend off a strong challenge from Jonty Bregazzi for a hard earned victory in the born 2003 age group. Matthew Black got the verdict over Chad Maghill and Tyler Hannay in the bunch sprint for third and Darcy Cain collected the girls' prize in tenth spot. Further down the field Joshua Glover salvaged 18th position after crashing on the finishing straight while contesting fourth place.

Aaron Lund came from behind to pip Charlie Gibson in the bunch gallop at the end of the born 2002 class. James Harrison, Will Corkill, Corrin and Shellan Leeming were just behind in third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions, with Nicholas Kissack leading the rest of the field in for seventh. Adam Kelly recovered from a crash to snatch first place from Lucas Mudie in the born 2001 & earlier grouping. Top girl Kaitlin Slack beat Ben Christian, Emma Draper and Alex Cain to the flag for third.

In the under 10 racing bikes James Harrison and Percy Hampton clipped off the front of a leading group of seven riders to snatch first and second. Jonty Bregazzi was third followed by Will Corkill, Aaron Lund, Charlie Moss (1st girl) and Zac Walker. Crash victim Charlie Gibson did well to fight his way back up to ninth place. In the under 12's William Draper outsprinted Thomas Bostock for the win. Tosh Teare and Adam Scarffe came in separately for third and fourth, while Adam Kelly headed Sam Batey in the battle for fifth. Emily Bridson was the top girl in 11th position.

A leading group of twelve riders formed at the head of the under 16's racing bikes and stayed clear to the finish where Jamie Dudley got the verdict in the sprint for the line. The hard working Matthew Draper took second ahead of Matthew Davies, Leon Mazzone, Nathan Draper, Owen Dudley, Matthew Bostock, Michael Moss and best girl Elizabeth Holden.

Full results are below.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Holden is Team Royal London 360's rider of the month for May.

The fourteen year-old receives the coveted award for her impressive early season performances, especially her overall success in the Isle of Man Youth Tour, the opening round of British Cycling's prestigious national youth series.

The talented teenager led the under 16's girls category from start to finish, recording two stage wins and a second place to finish a comfortable 47 seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

Prior to the Manx event "Lizzie" had an excellent ride in the North West circuit race championships in Southport, taking the silver medal behind Amy Gornall (Cycle Sport Pendle).

On the home front she leads the under 16 girls in her own club's Tuesday night youth league, where, competing on equal terms with the boys , she rarely finishes outside the top ten.

In recognition of her achievements Elizabeth receives a commemorative trophy and £50 in cash.
