Chelmer CC’s Daniel Babbs won the first round of the Ford CC Go Race Series, staged at the company’s banked track facility at the Dunton Centre in Essex on Thursday.

A fine field of 50 riders turned up for the opening event, and all were pleasantly surprised that the heavy rain earlier forecast had not materialised.

The first prime after five laps was won by Jonathan Pool (Chelmer CC), the second after seven laps by Alex Davis (Ford CC), and the third prime after 10 laps by Kevin Attleed (Glendene CC).

With just over half a lap of the 1.6-mile circuit to go to the finish, 36-year-old Daniel Babbs (Chelmer CC) broke away from the pack and built up a lead of around seven seconds.

He managed to dig in deep and at the chequered flag was first over the line by two bike lengths from Kevin Attleed (Glendene CC) who was leading the rapidly approaching pack, and his team-mate Colin King took third.
