Swift, who devoted the start of his season to the track - taking a world title in the scratch race and two further silver medals in the recent World Championships - will now concentrate on making a full recovery.

Jeremy Hunt will be added to the Team Sky squad for what is the 95th edition of the Giro d'Italia.

The 38-year-old has previously competed in all three of cycling’s Grand Tours and comes into the squad following a consistent Classics campaign.

The Giro kicks off on Saturday with an 8.7-kilometre time trial in Herning, Denmark.
