Dobbin wins Tour of Mining Valleys

Aberystwyth, Mid-Wales, 62 miles
Promoted by: Ystwyth CC
Event: 26th June 2011
Report: Snowdon Sports

FORMER National hill-climb champion James Dobbin put his ascending experience to good use when he won an uphill finish to the Tour of the Mining Valleys in Mid-Wales on Sunday.

Dobbin (Adeo Cadence RT) took the win by inches from Durham University's William Haynes, and the pair were the sole survivors of a fragile break who were just four seconds ahead of the advancing bunch.

The day began with Port Talbot Wheelers' James Lewis attacking alone to take the first prime at 12 miles, but he was soon reeled in after his efforts.

Next to go was former event winner Gareth McGuinness (Clwb Egni) who was aggressively attacking all day and only dropped back when the hunger knock took hold on the final circuit.

He gained around 1-40 before he was caught by Dobbin, and the pair ploughed on for a while before more riders came across to form the leading group.

Mid-Devon CC's Pete Vincent was also active at the front, and won the remaining two primes, but as they headed into the final lap Dobbin and Haynes had clipped off the front, and held a narrow lead to the line, while defending champion Gruff Lewis (Team UK Youth) had to settle for third this year at the front of the bunch.

Result:
1 James Dobbin (Adeo Cadence RT) 2:31:00
2 William Haynes (Durham University CC) @ same time
3 Gruff Lewis (Team UK Youth) @ 4sec
4 George Harper (VC St Raphael)
5 Daniel Davies (Team Wallis CHH)
6 Jerry Rayner (Somer Valley CC)
7 Richard Harris (Cwmcarn Paragon)
8 Glyndwr Griffiths (Team Cyclemart)
9 Brennan Townshend (Mid-Devon CC)
10 Dan Pearson (Port Talbot Wheelers) all @ same time
