Report: Castle Combe Summer Series - Week 3 of 15

Event: 19th May 2011
Promoted by: Chippenham Wheelers
Venue: Castle Combe Motor Racing Circuit, Wiltshire
Report: Andy Cook

A further 163 competitors turned up for the third week of the Castle Combe Summer Series where once again we were greeted with a fine dry evening. 31 Youth riders battled it out around the pit lane for the younger riders and the main circuit for the older age groups. Scott Curtis continued to dominate the U8 with Zoe Backstedt winning her category also in convincing fashion. Lance Hutchison also maintained his dominant form in the U10's with Elynor Backstedt managing to match her sister with a win. In the U12's race around the main circuit, the Tillett children "cleaned up" with James beating brother Sam and Emily winning the girls. Ashley Hutchison also emulated his brother by winning the U14 age category with Bethany Taylor getting the better of Nicole Pollock in their race. In a close sprint in the U16 race Tristen Robbins beat Matt Woods.

The two main races were contested by good numbers with 95 starters in the 3rd/4th Cat race and 37 starters in the E/1/2 event with another strong showing from the Team UK Youth squad led by former Paris Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt. Megan Backstedt, not to be outdone by her husband and children, and being a former International herself also rode in the 3rd/4th race. Racing was keenly fought as ever in both events and with 45 minutes elapsed in the 3/4 race the 3 laps to go board was held aloft. The finish was marred somewhat by a nasty crash around 400 metres from the line that resulted in two riders being taken to hospital. Thankfully the results of the crash were not as severe as first thought and resulted in one rider having a broken collar bone and the worst looking casualty having a minor operation to repair tendon damage to his finger. At the sharp end of the sprint Geoff Ripley managed to beat Tristan's Dad Will Robbins in the sprint for the line.

The E/1/2 event also ended in a sprint with James Stewart winning convincingly from Josh Papworth. Freddy Johanson managed to get the better of Grant Bayton making it a good night for the team UK Youth riders honing their form for the forthcoming crit series. Neil Coleman, a regular at the circuit coming from the area, was back home from the States to ride the Ras in Ireland and managed to show his American team colours with a few skirmishes off the front during the hotly contested event.
