Energy Cycles' McGuinness wins North Wales' road race

Event: Maurice's Denbigh Road Race, 15th May 2011
Promoted by: Rhyl CC
Event HQ: Denbigh Rugby Club, Denbigh, North Wales
Report: Craig Needs

A breezy wet day greeted the 37 starters of Maurice's Denbigh Road Race and it seemed that a least two riders were keen to get the seven 9 mile laps dispatched and be back in the Denbigh Rugby Club HQ without delay. Dieter Droger (Team CF) and Steven Fidler (Team Elite) were away before the race had reached the first ascent of the wall less than half way around the first lap. These two riders were to stay away for the next five laps despite the best efforts of several riders, including Rhyl CC's Rich Mills, Army CU's Mike Cripps and Planet X's Ryan Mullen, who attempted to bridge the gap which reached a high of 1' 35". Eventually a group of seven riders, including eventual winner Energy CC's Gareth McGuinness, got together and caught the two breakaways on lap 5 but not before the two had shared out the 4 hill primes located at the top of The Wall on laps 2, 3, 4 and 5.

With two laps to go and a nine man breakaway having 1'20" the bunch had to work hard to bring it all back together on lap 6. Immediately Gareth McGuinness attacked and soon had a race winning gap which allowed him to solo his way around the last 9 miles and win on the uphill finish. Jason Meyer (Stourbridge Velo) made a valiant attempt to cross the 60 second gap but failed and was caught and passed on the finish straight by 16 year old Chris Lafham (Planet X). Alongside him Paul Bethell (Team Elite), Ryan Mullen and original break member Dieter Droger completed the top 5.

Rhyl CC would like to thank the WC officials, NEG, CSAS Marshalls and all the members and friends of Rhyl CC who gave up their time to make the race possible.
