Barnes Does the Double in Clitheroe

National Women's Series/National Junior Women's Road Race Championships

Event: 7th May 2011, Clitheroe
Promoted by: CDNW
Event HQ: Eddisford Primary School
Report and Images: Andy Whitehouse

Motorpoint's Hannah Barnes took both the race victory and the National Junior Women's title today (Saturday) at Clitheroe. The fairly flat short Bashall Eaves circuit didn't offer any real challenges for the riders and the group pretty much stayed together for the twelve lap race. Horizon's Penny Rowson made the first move early on in the day but it was to be short lived and the bunch soon reeled the rider back to the fold.

Eve Dixon(Maxgear RT) tried to stir things up on the fourth circuit but as expected the bunch were having none of it and it seemed like it was going to be all riders together for the duration. With the laps counter chipping away quite rapidly the pace looked to be hotting up with Abergevenny's Lauren Creamer heading up the race and the bunch was beginning to string out and riders were beginning to fall away out of the back.

A move by Elinor Barker (Ajax Cardiff) looked useful at the midway point of the race and a thirty second advantage was soon picked up by Barker but the group again upped its pace and swallowed up the escapee. With a quarter of the race to run another attack, this time by Iona Sewell (Squadra Donne), pulled a decent advantage and looked to be holding the bunch but as before it was obvious the bunch wanted the sprint and so once again the lone attacker was bought back and the race held together in closing kilometres. In the end it was the Motorpoint girls who took the glory with a fine second from an in form Lucy Garner and a well crafted sprint victory by Hannah Barnes who took the champions jersey in her final year as a junior.

Hannah spoke to British Cycling after the race:

"The race went ok, tried to let the girls chase all the moves down, Elinor (Barker) went away but it didn't really work so we had to get the chase going to sort things out. No one could really get away, the course was twisty so if you made the break you could hide but there wasn't enough hills to break things up. Today was planned, take it to a sprint, sit in the wheels but I didn't think I would get the win, to be honest I thought Lucy (Garner) had got it so I was very happy with the win."
