Report: Ken Wright Memorial RR

On Sunday 17th April warm clear skies and only the slightest of breezes greeted the riders as the VC Revolution Ken Wright Memorial road race set off from Peldon Village Hall to cover 55 miles across the roads to the south of Colchester. The high early pace meant a few riders were dropped in the first lap as attacks were launched from the front of the bunch. A break of three riders, including 2 junior riders from Glendene CC, worked hard to get away but never managed to make a gap of more than a minute and the race came back together in the closing stages. The final ascent through Layer De La Haye saw David Barnes (ELV), Malcolm Smith (St Ives) and Scott Cousins (Maldon) make a valiant effort to escape with their breakway group only swept up by the rest of the field in the bunch sprint. Malcolm Smith held on for 2nd place, while the win went to his St Ives team mate Lee Desborough with James Sale of the Eagle Road Club in third. VC Revolution riders Andrew Elderfield and Ben Wright were both active in the race with Ben taking 14th place in the bunch sprint.
