Race report
The Sainsbury's UK School Games is an annual multi-sport event for the UK's elite athletes of school age. As many as 1,600 young athletes from ten sports compete over a four day Games designed to replicate the feel of a major multi-sport event, just like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Supported by Sainsbury's, the Youth Sports Trust, Legacy Trust UK lottery funding and in association with the North East city and town councils the UK School Games is a very prestigious event.

The Team winners of the Girls event.

For the 2010 edition, British Cycling increased their participation to showcase road, criterium and time trial racing, with 13 regional youth teams of 15,16 and 17 year olds entered from across the UK. The bike racing is over three days and each event attracts highly prized gold, silver and bronze medals. After an opening ceremony at Gateshead Stadium on Thursday, the bike racing started with a vengeance on Friday afternoon in the sun drenched Leazes Park, Newcastle.

Representing the East Midlands, 15 year old Lucy Garner got the cycling events off to an exciting start with a win in the Girls team criterium. Unfortunately for Lucy, the rest of her East Midlands squad were unable to match her herculean efforts and the team prize was taken by the well drilled Welsh squad with Amy Roberts and Elinor Barker in the top three. With the East Midlands squad snatching the remaining podium spot from the Yorkshire girls by 5 points. Lucy Garner totally dominated the girls racing on day 1 with an emphatic win in the Girls individual criterium event, with a disappointed Amy Roberts again having to settle for second place.

Action from the boys race.

The cycling team events at the UK School Games are a new concept for the young riders to get used to. Individual glory has to be relinquished to enable the whole team to do well. One star rider is of no use, you need three or four good riders to finish high up the classification to have any chance of victory.

In the Boys team criterium, Jonathan Dibben was the star rider without a strong team, he easily won the race but when the count-back came Dibben's South region were in 9th place, only four positions from the bottom of the table. The North West duo of Chris Latham and Chris Lawless made sure their team won gold with high positions at the finish, with West Midlands and Yorkshire claiming silver and bronze respectively.

As the boys lined up for the individual criterium, all eyes were on Jonathan Dibben. Aggressive, tactically aware and with a fine win already tucked under his belt, the Southampton rider who won multiple Golds at the Track Nationals this year, was going to be very difficult to beat on the 1km Leazes Park circuit. The boys race was fast and at times furious.

Tight corners and touching wheels ensured the medics had plenty of business, but the main contenders were all at the front and out of trouble. With five laps to go, the North West squad tried to control the race and their riders were strung across the front riding hard and blocking any breakaway attempts.

At the bell the main group was all together and the scene was set for a very exciting sprint. Jonathan Dibben, Sam Lowe and Harry Tanfield were all neck and neck as they approached the line, with Sam Lowe managing to hold his line and position to win individual gold. Dibben was 2nd with local boy Tanfield securing the bronze medal.

Podium for the Boys Team race.

The Leazes Park cycling criteriums were a perfect warm-up for the remaining two days of the UK School Games, the young riders were a credit to the sport of cycling, and believe it or not the parents were on best behaviour as well!
