Star Studded Line-up for British Time Trial Championships

Story posted August 19; 2010 | British Cycling/CTT National Time Trial Championships
2009 Race Report |

In what is probably one of the most prolific star studded fields for a long time, the British Time Trial Championships in Wales on September 5 is set to be one of the best yet with World and Olympic champions taking part. Both the Men's and Women's Championships have their share of star names and few bigger than Bradley Wiggins and Nicole Cooke, both Olympic champions.

After victory in the road race nationals, Geraint Thomas returns home to Wales to take a stab at the TT championship as well.

The Men's race sees no less than three Team Sky riders entered, Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas and Christopher Froome and after a 1-2-3 in the Road Race championships this year headed by Geraint Thomas, perhaps Team Sky is looking for the same result in Wales. Other star names include Wiggins former Madison partner Rob Hayles (Endura) and his Team Pursuit teammate Andy Tennant.

If the Men's field is star studded, the women's is packed with high profile World stars including the Olympic Road Race Champion Nicole Cooke. The Olympic Silver medallist, Emma Pooley is also entered and the Cervelo rider is the defending champion.

Like Thomas, Pooley has a chance to make it two British road championships in the one year after winning the Road Race title earlier this year. Neither of these riders will have it their own way though because as well as a host of British based riders competing such as Sarah Storey, Wendy Houvenaghel and Joanna Rowsell, there are more from European based teams. Riders such as Emma Trott and Sharon Laws.

In the Junior race, there is the World Madison champion Dan McLay of Hargroves Cycles who is also the British Junior Road Race champion. It's been a busy time for Dan with the Junior Track Worlds recently and the British Track Champs and Tour of Wales in the coming weeks.

All in all, the profile of the Time Trial championships is growing all the time as the professionals all look to take the champions jersey into the pro races in Europe.

Rules and Regs News
The race organisation, British Cycling, Cycling Time Trials and UCI have decided that, for the purposes of this event, the exemption on frames ONLY will be allowed across all categories.

This means that frames can be outside of the 3:1 ratio provided that they still conform to the 2009 regs, in particular the 8cm maximum width one (no part of the frame can be more than 8cm in section, regardless of the ratio). All seat post/bars/forks etc must still be 3:1 compliant.

The term 'frame' will be taken to apply to the single construction of the frame and will not, therefore, be extended to include removable seat posts even if they are specific to that frame (such as the earlier P3s). In such cases minor adaptations such as padding secured with tape will be permitted to make the component conform to the 3:1 ratio.

Aero bottles will be allowed only where the bottle and cage can be removed, but not where it forms an immovable part of the frame design and/or is deemed by the UCI Chief Commissaire to be mainly intended as an aerodynamic aid.

This interpretation will be extended to all riders in all categories except masters for whom general exemption from UCI technical regulations already exists.

ALL bicycles will be tested before and after the event. It is the responsibility of all competitors to ensure that their bicycle(s) meet the applicable regulations, failure to do so (or to correct any non-compliant component by means of padding) will result in that competitor being refused a start or (if the non-compliance is discovered after the ride) disqualified with no refund.
