Pooley wins her second stage race of 2010

Story posted June 21; 2010

Cervelo Test Team rider, Emma Pooley has won her second stage race of the season today after defending the lead she had in the Giro di Trentino race since stage 1. The British Time Trial Champion had won the first stage by over two minutes and then had the help of probably the strongest team in the peloton to help her defend it over the next two days.

Speaking afterwards, one of the hot favourites for the British Road Race title next weekend, Emma explained "It went really well today. We kept the jersey, the team worked hard and rode very aggressively and we were able to make some attacks. In the front group, there were fourteen riders with three from our team. Sharon (Laws) was super strong today and Claudia ended up in the breakaway with Arndt and finished third on the stage and in the general classification as well. Today's conditions were not easy. It was wet and cold and the team really held it together to achieve another great result for the team."

The director sportif, Jens Zemke, explained "we tried to make it hard again today as we were climbing 1,000 metres on the stage's only climb. We experienced tough conditions with heavy rain and it was quite cold. In the second of the two final laps we attacked again with Claudia Häussler. On her back wheel was Arndt and also Patuzzo. They arrived with at the finish with four riders, 25 seconds ahead of the bunch. Eleonora Patuzzo won, second was Judith Arndt and third place Claudia.

Another British rider, Sharon Laws, also riding for Cervelo, won the Sprinters jersey to go with Emma's winners jersey and the Mountains jersey that Emma also won.

Next up: Emma Pooley will now return to Britain for the National Road Race Championships (Pendle) on June 27 along with her British teammates Sharon Laws and Lizzie Armistead. All three are among the favourites to win the title along with defending champion Nicole Cooke. Read more about the championships for Women here:
