Round 1 of the Women's Team Series |
Hannah Barnes (Motorpoint/Marshalls Pasta) powered to a sprint win at the end of a very sunny race on the Hawthorn Hill course near Windsor superbly organised by Lisa West and the Twickenham CC. The event was over 80 kilometres (50 miles) and Barnes just pipped her team mate Hannah Walker with Laura Trott (British Cycling Eastern Region) in 3rd place.
With the highest number of teams ever registered with the Team Series, 22, there was a full field of 80 riders with 15 reserves for the first round in the Series. With an ability range from Elites to brand new first time racers, the early pace saw some riders lose contact and this really was the main story of the first part of the event. With 9 miles covered, a crash saw Kat Zolkewicz (Bad-Tri/Fred Baker Cycles) on the ground but she was able to remount and continue the race.
Two miles later however, there was another crash and it was Rhiannon Smallworth and Kate Broomhill both of (Team SW Ladies), Nicola Wheeler (Surrey League) and Karen Price (Dulwich Paragon) sitting on the tarmac but pleasingly with no major injuries. The speed of the race slowly increased but even so there were two more crashes with firstly Hannah Bowers of Mulebar and then a few miles later Rebecca Curley (Rapha/Condor), Roberta Dionello and Alison Stringer of Team Zappi and Jayne Randall-Hannan (Twickenham CC).
The bunch was now down to 50 riders when Tracey Corbett (Rapha/Condor) punctured but after a spirited chase of two kilometres, she was back in the race. With just a few miles to go to the finish, attacks started to come but no attacking rider had the confidence to commit 100 per cent and a bunch finish was certainly on the cards.
So it proved with Hannah Barnes taking the first of the seasons big Women’s races. It was pleasing that apart from cuts and bruises, none of the fallen riders had any serious injuries but it is serious that so many crashes happened in the first place. With riders not bothering to obey the Commissaries warning from the car, better discipline will be needed for the rest of the season.
Special mention must be made of Angelo's Restaurant of Twickenham. Owner Angelo and his wife gave generously for the three primes on offer worth £25 each time - it is sponsors like this that will always be welcomed in women's racing. Thanks Angelo.
