Report: NCRA Spring Handicap Race 4
Posted: 28th March 2010 | Report: Dave Birch
The fourth of the Northants Cycle Racing Spring Handicap road races returned to the Old circuit. In fine, but windy conditions, 54 riders battled it out over 3 three laps of the 10 mile circuit. The 'early off' groups worked well together to account for all of the top ten places despite valiant efforts from the scratch pair of Raphael Deinhart of Cyclepremier Metaltek RT and Phil Rayner who started 12.5 minutes down but trailed the leaders by less than a minute at the finish.
The winner, in only his third road race, was Martin Hamilton of 45 Road Club who powered clear on the last lap to win by 12 seconds (with a time of 1.16.32) from a group which contained the rest of the top ten riders. These were, in order, Sam Brogan of Leicestershire Road Club, Matt Garfield of Fenland Clarion CC, John Taylor of Welland Valley CC, Vic Barnett of Welland Valley, Nigel Burns of St Ives CC, Alex Fry of Welland Valley, Steven Coulam of Dream CC, Chris Rimes of Fenland Clarion CC and Ian Dick of Rockingham Forest Wheelers.
This was another great day for Welland Valley's new road race squad. Not only did they have three riders in the first ten but had Ray Taylor and Stuart Dawkins placed in the lead group.
