Moses Wins Cadence Junior Road Race

Story posted March 21, 2010; by Richard Robotham and Gillian Granger

Glendene CC rider, Tom Moses, was the winner of the Cadence Junior Road Race, the first round of the British Cycling National Junior Road Race series held in Wales on Sunday. The Yorkshire rider clipped off the front of a break with two kilometres to go and held on to his lead to clinch the victory well ahead of his rivals.

In dry and sunny conditions, the race was run over a brand new course around the beautiful Wye Valley and surrounding countryside. Juniors from far and wide around Britain converged on the race and on the line were 80 eager young bike riders for the race from Abergavenny over three tough King of the Mountain climbs.

Many of the early race breaks were soon reeled in and by the first serious climb and KOM prime at Gwehelog, the bunch were all back together. The prime at the top of the climb was won by Daniel McLay (Hargroves Cycles) who has been in winning form in Belgium recently. Powerful climbing by Welsh rider Sam Harrison (Planet X Road CC) won him the second KOM prime of the day and as a result of the increase in pace, his attack decimated the race with the peloton split all over the place.

Sam Harrison leads Joshua Edmondson

Sam Harrison then went on to win the last KOM of the day and the KOM competition overall. Three riders managed to break clear of what was left of the main peloton; Sam Harrison, Joshua Edmundson (Motorpoint/Marshalls Pasta) and Matthew Hill (Mid Devon CC). Behind them was a group of thirteen riders giving chase. Just before the main descent into Mitchel Troy, the group of thirteen managed to catch the leading group of three riders and had forged a lead of 58 seconds over the bunch as they entered the dual carriageway.

With 5km to go, four riders had gained a small advantage over the leading group; Tom Moses (Glendene CC), Sam Harrison, Lewis Bayckyi (Team Wallis) and Adam Yates (Maxgear RT). An ever so strong Tom Moses then clipped off the front with two kilometres remaining and held his 20 metre lead all the way to the finish.

Winner  - Tom Moses – Glendene CC
Talking after the race, the winner Tom Moses (Glendene CC) said “I didn’t expect that really. It was a really really hard race where you had to be in the right place at the right time. Midway through the race, I was getting a bit excited and I thought  I was working too hard but in the end I think it paid off as I felt really strong today."

"So I am happy with the win.” When asked about the climbs Tom said “I expected to be strong on the climbs as my training has been going well.”  Tom was asked when he knew he had the win. Tom replied “When we came off the bypass on the run into the finish there was a group of 16 of us and at that point, I didn’t feel too strong, so I waited and waited and then I saw Sam Harrision on the front.”

“I knew that he was a strong rider and Adam Yates was up there with him as well, so I know that was a good move to go with. Then Lewis Balycki came across to join us. We then hit a really steep climb and I went hard up that climb and this was when Sam Harrison was dropped. That left me, Adam and Lewis. I felt I was the strongest in the group so I pushed on with an attack and managed to stay about 20 metres in front of the others all the way to the finish line”.

Second Place  - Lewis Balyckyi – Team Wallis – CHH
Lewis was asked if he was happy with second place “I am really happy with second. I was feeling pretty tired though on the climbs. My team mate Matt Holmes was keeping me up there and safe so that was pretty good. On the bypass, just on the last section, I was kinda feeling it because there wasn't many coming through and when we were getting the time checks, they were constantly coming down; 15 seconds or so each time.”

“We were all working pretty hard. The key move came at 5km to go when me, Adam Yates, Tom Moses and Sam Harrison broke away. Then we dropped Sam and Tom Moses attacked at two or three km to go.  I knew he was a good rider and if he broke away he would be able to keep it. Adam and I tried really hard to catch him taking turns at the front. I was surprised with how well I did today as my training has been a little up and down lately with all the bad weather”

Third Place – Adam Yates – Maxgear RT
Adam was asked if he was disappointed with third place. “I was a bit disappointed because I got a stitch with about 3km to go and I think I could have done better if I hadn’t got that. But, I can't really complain with third.  I rode the race last year and did quite well but I thought the course this year was good.”

Tom Moses was driving the race along from the start.
