Elite Cycle Road Race, Sunday, 15th August, 2010
Organisers Colin Coe and Alan Shields will be using their experience of many years to put on a race in 2010 around the lanes of Cambridgeshire. One of only two road events with ‘National A’ status that are not included in British Cycling’s “Premier Calendar” for 2010, the race will be over a distance of 200 kilometres, making it the longest single-day road race on the UK calendar this year. The organisers are planning a route around the Fenland market towns before returning to a starting point (yet to be announced) for the last hour on a finishing circuit.

The organisers had this to say about their plans for the event:
"We didn’t apply for 'Premier' status because we were waiting to hear which of the local authorities would be willing to host the race and it is frustrating that negotiations have taken so long. Unfortunately, in the present economic climate, we have had to be patient and realistic. Most, if not all local authorities, are seeking to make cuts in services and other projects, however, we are now talking budgets to them and are quietly confident that we can achieve our objective of putting on a quality race.

It would be all too easy to settle for an existing road circuit in the middle of nowhere - but that’s not what we are about. The future of road racing depends more than ever on linking up with local communities and that certainly applies to any event with pretensions of national status. The number of ‘Elite’ squads announced so far for 2010 bodes well for the coming season and we would obviously like them all in our race. We will also welcome interest from regional teams.

A rolling road closure is our aim and that will obviously have a bearing on the number and size of the teams that we can accommodate. Separate awards are proposed for the team classification in addition to the individual prize list.
