Thanks to Dot Tilbury for the report
Conditions were near perfect for the 205 riders who competed in the 19th and final round of Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man's 2009 children's cycling league. Edward Teare continued his winning ways in the novices class, crossing the line well clear of the field to complete a hat-trick of victories. Chloe Comaish held off a strong challenge from Maddie Butterworth to grab the runners-up spot and Sophia Littlewood overtook Chloe Dillon in the final few metres to claim third. Sam Cunningham led Callum Dunn, Mia Littlewood, Ryan Blair and James Scott over the line for sixth, with Harvey Coole and Bethan Cubbon just behind in 11th and 12th places respectively.
In the born 2004 & Later age group Nathan Slack returned from holiday to pick up his second win of the series, finishing well ahead of Harvey Lawrence, who outsprinted Mia Worthington and Joshua Dudley for second. Ben Boyle edged out Lucy Worthington, James Devereau and Cameron Dudley for fifth, while Harry Kneen won his battle with Mairi Harrison for ninth. Caitlin Courtie and Haydn Harris completed the top twelve leader board.
A determined Matthew Black got an early gap in the born 2003 event, taking the chequered flag with an extended advantage over Jonty Bregazzi. Leading girl Darcy Cain was a close third and the ever improving Joshua Jones an impressive fourth. Aaron Ramsay got the verdict over Jack Collister, Kitty Thomas and Tom Brennan in the dash for fifth and Leah Brennan got away from James Gartshore to claim ninth. Relative newcomer Yarden Ashkenazi did well to take the bunch gallop for 11th place.
James Harrison dropped breakaway partners Will Corkill and Sam Corlett on the final lap to pick up his second win in the born 2002 category. Joshua Mills and Wilfy Kermode were equal fourth ahead of fellow chasers Elliot Lawrence, Jack Whitelegg and Alastair Flint. Top girl Charlotte Watson beat Corrin Leeming, Saul Bradley, Ben Haworth and Joshua Crichton in the gallop for ninth and Anna Kelly squeezed out Shellan Leeming for 14th spot.
In the born 2001 race Max Walker attacked from the gun and was never caught. Adam Scarffe led Tyler Cain home for second and Matthew Flint got past Juan Kneen in the closing stages to snatch fourth. Rory Donegan was a lonely sixth and Chloe Crellin pipped Lydia Glover for the girls' honours in a very close sprint for seventh.
Twin brothers Luke and Tom Murray fought it out in the born 2000 class, with Luke eventually coming out on top. Lucas Mudie overcame Adam Kelly in the dash for third and Joseph Corkish took fifth ahead of Harry Cain and Ciara Sowerby, who took the girls' prize. Sean Maxwell, Jake Flowers and Daniel Costain rounded off the top ten.
Born 1999 winner Marcus Simpson dropped Joseph Glover and Daniel Scarffe on the final lap to score his sixth success of the season. Glover outsprinted Scarffe for second and Alex Cain held off Kaitlin Slack in the tussle for fourth. Ryan Courtie was a solid sixth and Rachael Pearson came from behind to seize seventh from Cameron Honeybone.
Ashley Faragher led from start to finish in the born 1998-96 grouping. Sophie Black chased on her own, but in the end had to settle for a safe second ahead of Ben Cunningham, who ousted Sam Mills for third.
Making his move on the penultimate lap, Joseph Haddock attacked breakaway companions Nathan Draper and Victoria Kinrade to secure his maiden win in the under 12 racing bikes. Marcus Simpson led fellow chasers Breeshey Cain and Callum Clague over the line for fourth and William Draper got the better of Max Walker and Charlie Gibson in the battle for seventh.
A group of eight riders, driven by Thomas Mazzone, lapped the field in the Under 16 racing bikes. Mazzone was first in the final sprint followed by John Sanderson, Jake Kelly, Warwick Sanderson, Alex Haddock, Jack Wolstencroft, Nicholas Corlett and Leon Mazzone. Callum Donnell was the best of the rest in ninth place and Anna Christian the top girl in 11th position.
Please note that the final overall positions in the league will be revealed at the prize presentation in the Villa Marina on Sunday, 6th September. Details from Dot on 851691.
