West Midlands Region Road Race League
July 15, 2009; Thanks to Richard Lodge
The West Midlands Road Race League (RRL) reached its half-way point on 5 July with the Plan B promotion at Hanbury near Burton on Trent. The main beneficiaries of the day were Ian Thomas (Paramount CRT) and Lewis Cowley (of the promoting club) placing in 4th and 5th respectively, which moved both riders into the top 10 in the RRL. Wayne McKeown (Solihull CC) also placed on the day and his extra points move him ahead of Matt Bailey (Halesowen C&AC) into 2nd place in the League. Still out front by a good measure is Russell Falder (Mammoth Lifestyle Racing Team).
The team award is becoming very keenly contested between the Halesowen and Solihull clubs, with Russell Falders individual scores keeping his team in the top three as well. Halesowen in particular were the star team of the previous round of the RRL, the Wyre Forest CRC event, collecting a win and 6th place to take the overall team lead, which they continue to hold.
Several organisers have noted that both the Halesowen and Solihull clubs have responded really well to the Team concept of the RRL in being the main two clubs contacting the organisers on a regular basis to advise of their preferential five rider entries as permitted to all promoting clubs in the RRL. There are though five teams now that have scored points from three different riders – Halesowen C & AC, Team Echelon – Spiuk, Epic cycles-Viner RT, Stourbridge Velo, and Tunstall Whs CC.
It is very encouraging that many more riders are starting to realise that all clubs in the Region get priority of entries no matter which eligible category they might be, and a number of 3rd and 4th category riders are entering and finding themselves competitive. In total, 36 riders have now placed in the points. With six events remaining, there is still plenty of opportunity for riders to score highly in both the individual and team classifications. The next two events are the Halesowen club own promotion on 26th July, and the Stafford RC Diamond Jubilee celebration event on 9 August. Both organisers would welcome further entries from West Midlands riders across the 2nd, 3rd and 4th categories.
In addition, any clubs in the Region who are enjoying the competition the RRL provides, and are interested in adding further events to the League into 2010 would be very welcome to contact Carl Robinson (bcwestmidlandsrca@yahoo.co.uk) at the earliest opportunity.
