British Cycling Olympic Podium Programme athlete Steve Cummings has been selected to ride the Tour de France. Cummings will ride his second Tour for professional , in support of team leader and 2011 champion Cadel Evans.

The news is Cummings’ second selection in seven days, having made the long list for Team GB’s Olympic road race team and completes his comeback from a series of crashes and serious injuries in 2012.

Cummings ended 2011 on a high as part of the British team that delivered Mark Cavendish to World Championship victory and in 2012 showed promise before a crash which would significantly disrupt his season.

A broken pelvis in February at the Tour of the Algarve was followed by a broken wrist in the Vuelta a Pais Vasco, before being forced to withdraw from the Tour of California in mid-May after crashing on his partially-healed wrist.

Cummings made his return to competition in the Tour of Switzerland, a race he completed without further injury to seal his place in the Tour de France, which starts June 30.
