UCI Paracycling World Championships

- UCI Paracycling World Championships The Great Britain Cycling team start the World Road Championships on Thursday 10th of September. The four day event includes road time trials and road races for all categories, with the Great Britain team having a wealth of experience from previous World Championships and Paralympic Games, as well as some new faces in the largest team Great Britain has sent to a major Paracycling Road Championships. The course in and around Bogogno, just north of Milan, includes some testing corners and undulating terrain that will certainly test all the athletes competing in some way. A sharp bend a few hundred metres away from the finish line will certainly make the road races interesting on the final approach to the finish line! Riders competing on day 1 of the competition include Paralympic champion Rachel Morris, our leading female handcyclist, who has had to endure a difficult start to the championships with a classification change to make life even more challenging for Rachel in her quest for a medal in the road time trial. Next up in the day are Simon Richardson LC2 category and National Champion Russ White LC1 category who also ride the time trial. Great Britain’s first competitor down the start ramp of the championships will be Rob Wickham who launches the team’s bid for success at these championships. Day 2 of the championships will see multiple champions David Stone (trike) and Darren Kenny set off in their quest for more medals from major championships in their respective CP categories. Also in the CP classes are Rik Waddon and Shaun McKeown who ride the time trial on Day 2. Beijing Gold medallist Sarah Storey competes on Day 2 in the road time trial along with some strong challengers for the women’s tandem events with Britain’s entrants Ellen Hunter/Aileen McGlynn and Rimmington/Turnham battling it out for medals too. The men’s tandem time trial will see a debut for top UK time triallist Michael Hutchinson piloting the very experienced Anthony Kappes. Riders will then face road races for their categories on Day3 and 4 of the championships. I’m sure everybody back home wishes the team every success in Bogogno.
