Jacob Scott and his Canyon dhb SunGod team proved beyond all doubt that they were the stars of the show, wrapping up the final round of the men’s HSBC UK | National Road Series at the 182km Beaumont Trophy in Stamfordham, Northumberland.

Coming into the finale of the three-race series as leader of the individual standings, Jacob Scott had a point to prove, not wanting to win the series without winning a round. He achieved his goal in style, winning the Beaumont Trophy for Canyon dhb SunGod in a two-man breakaway. Alex Richardson (Alpecin-Fenix) took a fine second place after forcing the winning move, and Matt Gibson (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling) won the sprint for third to round out the podium.

As soon as the flag dropped, Steve Lampier (Saint Piran) launched the first attack. While his move was unsuccessful, his team were well represented in the counterattack that stuck; Cameron Jeffers (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling), Ross Holland, Bradley Symonds (Saint Piran), Joseph Rees (BIKESTRONG KTM), Julian Roche (Richardsons-Trek DAS), Jordan Peacock (Spirit Bontrager RSS Rotor, Toby Jarvis (Team PB Perfomance), Owain Roberts (Wales Racing Academy), and Jake Scott forced their way clear. They were held at 20 seconds for a long time, before the elastic snapped and the gap went up to over three minutes.

The group worked well together for 90km, the only action coming from the battle for the KOM primes at the top of the infamous Ryals. The 20% slopes injected life into the well organised break, before they would settle down and find their rhythm again, ready for each subsequent lap. Owain Roberts proved strongest on both ascents.

While the gap ebbed and flowed, never dipping below one minute or much above three, the chase behind would begin in earnest the second time up the Ryals. The peloton was strung into a long line and slowly fractured, with more than a dozen riders going clear.

The chasing group made inroads quickly and they soon joined the original break, forming a large bunch at the head of affairs. However, this new 20-rider group was never likely to work as well as the smaller break they had caught and we wouldn’t have long to wait to see how it panned out.

Coming through the finish line after 120km, five riders, including series leader Jacob Scott, had a 30-second gap on their chasers and almost two minutes on the peloton. As the dust settled, four more riders made their way across and it looked like this break would be decisive. Joining Scott were eight others: Robert Scott and Max Stedman (Canyon dhb SunGod); Matt Gibson and Zeb Kyffin (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling); Bradley Symonds (Saint Piran); Ross Lamb (SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling); Matthew King (Team PB Performance); and Alex Richardson (Alpecin-Fenix).

With 35km to go, Alex Richardson lit the touch paper on the final climb of the Ryals. He would start a flurry of attacks that saw him pull away with Jacob Scott and very quickly build an unassailable lead.

Working well together, and with the break marshalled by Scott’s Canyon dhb SunGod teammates, the two riders would stay together until the final left turn into the finishing straight. As the stronger sprinter of the two, Jacob Scott handily dispatched his breakaway companion, leaving himself with enough time to celebrate the race and the series victory as he crossed the finish line.

Stedman and Rob Scott would cross the line inside the top 10 to secure Canyon dhb SunGod’s overall victory in the HSBC UK | National Road Series.
